Portrait of a person of interest
n this monumental portrait, Jaime Shelley turns the recognizable face of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un into an image of satire, exposure and political scrutiny. Rather than presenting a conventional likeness, the figure is fragmented and enlarged, shifting the viewer’s attention between the familiar public persona and the disturbing details hidden within it.
The work explores the carefully manufactured image of political power: the official portrait, the controlled expression and the visual symbols through which authoritarian figures attempt to appear permanent and untouchable. By isolating and exaggerating elements of the face, Shelley disrupts that controlled image and exposes the human being—and the absurdity—behind the propaganda.
Humor and discomfort coexist throughout the painting. The portrait initially appears direct and recognizable, yet its monumental scale and deliberate distortion transform it into something theatrical, unsettling and faintly grotesque. The title, Portrait of a Person of Interest, borrows the language of investigation and surveillance, suggesting that the subject is not simply being portrayed, but examined, questioned and placed under suspicion.
Through satire, Pop Art and political commentary, the painting reflects on dictatorship, personality cults and the manipulation of public imagery. It also asks a broader question: what remains of political power when its carefully constructed image is enlarged, fragmented and exposed?
