*Colors may appear slightly different on your computer than they actually are*
Mao takes center stage, surrounded by the symbols of corporate power, technology, and popular culture. Pinocchio stands beside him: a familiar figure whose story turns on truth and lies. Mathematical formulas and Chinese writing spread across the canvas, bringing the language of science and knowledge into the mix.
Across the bottom, the Chinese phrase “反正现在中国不是中国人作主” appears beside its English translation: “China is not ruled by Chinese anyway.” The blunt statement gives the painting its political bite. Mao’s image, General Electric, and Pinocchio meet in an irreverent Pop Art collision of power, propaganda, and deception. The title, Dale duro, adds its own push: keep going, and look hard at who holds power—and who gets to tell the story.
